Clinical Supervision is a role where a one who is senior in the counseling profession guides the growth and professional development of a junior profession. Clinical Supervision is a requirement of licensure programs. The Supervisor serves both the counselor in training and the client and is legally and ethically responsible for the clinical practice. All counselors-in-training will have access to a weekly email digest (Motivational Monday) exclusive to Starlight Counseling counselors-in-training. Sessions may occur in person or by the HIPAA compliant video service Vsee .
Types of Clinical Supervision
300-hour internship:
Is a requirement in order to complete the registration process for credentialed substance abuse counselors with the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board (NCSAPPB). Interns will explore counselor identity, clinical development, the 12 Core Functions. Skills, Knowledge, Attitude focus (60%-attitude, 30%-knowledge, 10%-skill). Those who pursue the certified substance abuse counselor (CSAC) credential, will receive exam prep assistance during the 300-hour internship.

Supervised Clinical Practic e (Professional track) :
Counselors-in-training who have completed the registration process and pursuing full license or credential will receive guidance, training, feedback on skills and documentation and mentorship in the 12 core functions, 46 Global Criteria, and identify Clinical Bliss elements. Skills, Knowledge, Attitude focus (50%-attitude, 40%-knowledge, 10%-skill) Then after the first year (40%-attitude, 30%-knowledge, 30%-skill). Counselors-in-training for the licensed clinical addictions specialist (LCAS) credential will receive exam assistance.

On-Going Supervision:
Fully licensed LCAS may receive clinical supervision voluntarily however fully credentialed CSAC must receive ongoing supervision in compliance with NCGS 90-113.37A .
The length of supervision and Skills, Knowledge, and Attitude focus will vary depending on the needs of the counselor.
Secondary Supervision:
Counselors-in-training who have a primary supervisor may desire extra supervision for topics not discussed in primary supervision or coverage for when their primary supervisor is ill, on vacation or unable to provide supervision. Counselors-in-training may also elect secondary supervision to increase competency in areas not mastered by the primary supervisor.
The length of supervision and focus on Skills, Knowledge, and Attitude will vary depending on the needs of the counselor.
Supervisor training:
Counselor receive training hours toward becoming a certified clinical supervisor.
The cost of clinical supervision: $100 per session with prepay specials. Counselors in training may choose either option and have the freedom to switch payment options by notifying the clinical supervisor.
300-hour internship for the substance abuse professional is a flat rate of $450.

*Length in supervision will depend on the counselor's motivation to complete required tasks, activities and documentation. Clinical supervisors are gatekeepers to the professional clinical practice and may elect to not refer a counselor in training for a full or associate license. Payment for services is a payment for the time in supervision not for a recommendation for credentialing. Recommendation for credentialing is earned by the counselor in training.
